Martyn started playing badminton at the age of 11.At the time he was a keen tennis player when his mum and auntie took him to the local sports centre for a game of badminton. Martyn being a good all round sportsman picked it up straight away and joined the local badminton club at Bedwas. Through Bedwas BC Martyn showed early potential and gained selection for the Mid-Glam County squad and started to compete in local tournaments at U12 age category. Success was not far around the corner winning his first ever tournament.
Martyn had a lot of success at junior level winning numerous National titles with his most notable achievement winning the Welsh National U17 singles, doubles and mixed titles. His success at this age group put him in good stead to repeat his U17 success winning the U19 singles, doubles and mixed titles all in the same year.
At the age of 18 Martyn had the opportunity of forming a new doubles partnership with Matthew Hughes. As a pair they experienced a lot of success winning back to back Spanish Open titles in 05 and 06 and back to back Brazilian Open titles in 04 and 05, Martyn`s proudest achievement to date was winning the Welsh Open in 2006 becoming the 1st Welsh pair in 20yrs to win the mens doubles title.
Martyn won his first full senior cap for Wales at the age of 17 and gone has gone on to gain over 50 International caps in 7 years, representing Wales at 2 Commonwealth Games.
Recently have been included into the GB Squad based at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes with my ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London.
