Matt Elias has been a dominant contender in the 400mh for Wales. At his international debut in 1997 for Great Britain, he set the Welsh junior record at the World Junior Championships. In 1998, he represented Wales for the first time at the Commonwealth Games where he helped the 4x400m to a bronze medal.
Continuing to win several U23 AAA 400mh titles, Matt had an amazing 2002 season. At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, he set the Welsh senior record in the heats and won the Silver medal in the final. For good measure, Matt ran the anchor leg in the 4x400m which saw Wales winning the Silver medal and setting a new Welsh record, as well as having the third fastest time in the world.
Matt was a member of the 2006 Welsh team for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
